Packing For The Climate
Packing for various climate factors can add a bit of guess work to loading a backpack. However, there are also some things that span all of them.
WATER!
Regardless of whether it is hot or cold outside, the risk of dehydration in both is extremely high. Not only does your body perspire water in hot weather, but it also uses it to heat your body in the cold..
Undergarments
No matter where you are headed, it is always benificial to pack a few extra pairs of undergarments, such as underwear and socks. Wet or soiled undergarments can cause serious health problems such as trenchfoot.
Hot and Sunny
Hot and sunny envoriments can be overcome with brimmed hats, sunglasses, and loose clothing. Hats help reflect the sun from your face while the sunglasses protect your eyes. In extremely UV saturated environments, such as a desert, long garments are best to prevent sun damage to the skin.
Cold and Cloudy
In cold environments it is important to pack extra layers for your journey. This may end up meaning less room for traditional comfort items, but there is no comfort like warmth. This includes silkweights, long johns, and a jacket or two relative to the climate. Ponchos are great for wet weather as they cover the adventurer and the backpack.
